Anxiety in teens doesn’t always look the way we expect. It can show up quietly, in everyday moments, often mistaken for moodiness or just “teenage behaviour.” Whether you’re a parent concerned about your child or a teen wondering if what you’re feeling is normal — you’re not alone. Here are six signs that might point to anxiety, and why they matter.
If your teen suddenly starts withdrawing — skipping social outings, avoiding school, or making excuses to not attend family gatherings — it could be more than just shyness. Anxiety often brings a fear of being judged or not fitting in. From the outside, it might look like they're “just being difficult,” but inside, they may be overwhelmed by self-doubt or fear of saying the wrong thing.
An anxious mind rarely rests. Teens may toss and turn, struggle to fall asleep, or wake up in the night feeling restless or panicked. Some may say they just aren’t tired, but the real reason could be racing thoughts or fears they don’t know how to talk about. What to look for: Staying up late with devices, dreading bedtime, or feeling exhausted despite long hours in bed.
Anxiety doesn’t always come out as fear — sometimes it comes out as anger or frustration. If your teen is snapping more often, seems unusually moody, or has emotional outbursts over small things, it could be their way of expressing what they can’t put into words. What to look for: Frequent arguments, emotional shutdowns, or big reactions that don’t seem to match the situation.
Does your teen get upset over minor mistakes? Do they constantly worry about not being “good enough”? Teens with anxiety often place impossible expectations on themselves and fear failure deeply. This pressure can be exhausting and affect their self-esteem and mental health. What to look for: Obsessing over grades, reluctance to try new things unless they’re sure they’ll succeed, or putting off tasks out of fear they won’t be perfect.
Anxiety doesn’t just live in the mind — it shows up in the body. Teens may complain of headaches, stomachaches, or feeling unwell when there’s no clear medical cause. These symptoms are very real and often overlooked as “faking it” when they’re actually signs of inner stress. What to look for: Frequent trips to the school nurse, asking to stay home due to feeling sick, or unexplained pain.
Teens with anxiety may constantly worry about things like school performance, friendships, the future, or even world events. They may seem stuck in a loop of “what ifs,” always preparing for the worst-case scenario, even when there’s no immediate threat. What to look for: Repetitive questioning, fear of disappointing others, or needing constant reassurance.
If you see yourself or your teen in any of these signs, don’t panic — anxiety is common, and help is available. The most powerful thing you can do is start a gentle, open conversation. Listen without judgment. Let them know they’re not alone and that support is always here
